The artist Bernard Dufour stepped in for long close-ups of his hand (to generally be Frenhofer’s) as he sketches and paints Marianne for unbroken minutes at a time. During those moments, the plot, the actual push and pull between artist and model, is placed on pause as you see a work take form in real time.

With his 3rd feature, the young Tarantino proved that he doesn’t need any gimmicks to tell a killer story, turning Elmore Leonard’s “Rum Punch” into a tight thriller anchored by a career-best performance from the legendary Pam Grier. While the film never tries to hide the fact that it owes as much to Tarantino’s love for Blaxploitation as it does to his affection for Leonard’s source novel, Grier’s nuanced performance allows her to show off a softer side that went criminally underused during her pimp-killing heyday.

A crime epic that will likely stand as being the pinnacle achievement and clearest, but most complex, expression of the great Michael Mann’s cinematic eyesight. There are so many sequences of staggering filmmaking pronhud accomplishment — the opening eighteen-wheeler heist, Pacino realizing they’ve been made, De Niro’s glass seaside home and his first evening with Amy Brenneman, the shootout downtown, the climatic mano-a-mano shootout — that it’s hard to believe it’s all inside the same film.
